Edge of Tomorrow features a poster of a haunted Tom Cruise in a generic looking sci-fi mechasuit infront of more generic sci-fi stuff. So I wasn’t really that interested in the movie but after getting pleasantly surprised by last year’s Oblivion on Blu Ray Edge of Tomorrow might also fall in this category of perfectly acceptable sci-fi mumbo jumbo. Instead director Doug Liman (Jumper, The Bourne Identity) delivers a perfectly paced and top entertaining sci-fi version of Groundhog Day.

This week the big release is X-Men: Days of Future Past and as indicated in our german review the movie is absolutely worth seeing on the big screen.
But what if you have never seen an X-Men movie?
With
- 3 original movies (X-Men, X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand),
- one prequel (X-Men: First Class)
- and 2 spin offs (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine)
this movie universe is starting to become as complicated as the comics it is based on. It might even be on the verge of alienating the uninitiated or those who have given up on comic book movie.
So in this article we have compiled different approaches in order to be able to enjoy this newest X-Men installment. Because, let’s face it, X-Men: Days of Future Past is not a movie for rookies.
In 1954 we awakened something…
The line uttered by Dr. Ishiro Seriwaza (Ken Watanabe) showcases that this new iteration of the iconic movie monster Godzilla (Gojira in Japanese) is the polar opposite of Roland Emmerich’s 1998 interpretation. Instead of being scared of the 60 years legacy – and the fair share of camp associated with the 28 Japanese movies – Gareth Edwards (Monsters) has crafted a reboot that treats Godzilla as a sacred cow. The result is an astonishing film showcasing Edwards’s storytelling skills while feeling like a multimillion dollars apology for Roland Emmerich’s version.
Note: This is the first (and hopefully not last) time that we have two separate reviews for one movie. For Krammer’s review (in German) click here. For Wolfgang’s take on it just continue:
The bad thing about the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes is that director Rupert Wyatt is not returning to direct the sequel. The good thing about this new trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (those titles for sure do run long) seems to follow in Wyatt’s footsteps of making these movies more about the apes as fully fleshed characters instead of villains for CGI battles:

For some thoughts hit the jump:
After 2012’s reboot of the Spider-Man franchise (The Amazing Spider-Man) Mark Webb returns for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Where the first movie was trying to emulate the style Christopher Nolan’s hyper-real Batman reimagining, this movie goes full into comic book mode, boasting colorful villains, giant action setpieces and an abundance of trouble for the hero Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield). And while the movie doesn’t reinvent the wheel – or convert any people who aren’t already on board of the superhero train – it offers a solid enough story to entertain for its quite long running time.
Vanity fair is featuring a big Game of Thrones special and aside from some pretty nice pictures they also get some interesting comments from showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as well as book author George R.R. Martin’s concerns about the show possibly outpacing the books:
In just 4 weeks the fourth Season of Game of Thrones will return. Riding on many promises (for example that this year there won’t be a “Episode 9” meaning the episode where everything goes haywire but instead many episodes fighting for that title) I can’t wait to find out how the tables will be turned this year. Now HBO has unveiled yet another trailer for Season 4 and there is still a recap video of Seasons 1-3 to come similarly to what they did in the previous years. But for now enjoy the newest trailer with even more dragon shots:

Such a fantastic race! Tonight was the night the first Science Fiction movie won Best Director while 12 Years a Slave still got some great recognition by winning Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o). The race (aside from some questionable choices in Documentary and Foreign Language Film but that always happens in those categories) was just a joy to watch with Gravity getting more recongition that I could have ever hoped for back when I watched Cuarón’s masterpiece for the first time.
Dallas Buyers Club scored big with three wins for Make Up, Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey.
The big surprise winner is Spike Jonze for original screenplay (Her) and American Hustle turned out to be the big loser with 0/10.
