Well we have heard this story before so it is not that shocking. Futurama has been cancelled in 2003 before and continued its life via straight to DVD movies (four episodes strung together). Similarly to Family Guy the sales were so profitable that it was decided to bring back the series in 2010.
It has been 3 seasons now (or 1 season split in two and the second season only half-aired) that Futurama has been back on a weekly basis. But apparently the show is no longer profitable for Comedy Central. Producer David X. Cohen had this to say:
“I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news… It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be canceled at a moment’s notice.”
There is still the second half of the current season (13 Episodes) to air with a final episode about Leela and Fry. The producers repeatedly stated that they had grown pretty good at making “final episodes” and therefore last season’s Rebirth and Overclockwise already acted as if it might be the last we see from Futurama.
So let’s hope that the final episode they have penned out will be a satisfying send-off similarly to the episode The Devil’s Hands are Idle Playthings which was the last episode before Futurama got cancelled (the first time) and also felt like it was ending the series. But in a strange way I feel like Cohen – these past 2 (or 4) seasons have been a gift I never anticipated so I already had more Futurama than I thought I’d ever have.
