Last year Children of Men made its way all to the 24th December spot. The movie tells the story of a society where women can no longer give birth to children. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón this movie tells a story about the importance of children and the miracle of birth that we tend to forget from time to time.
Following Clive Owen who has to protect a girl (Claire-Hope Ashitey) bearing the first child in years results in a messiah-tale without any godly intervention. The movie embodies hope and despair and one scene cements the incredible storytelling that made this movie so great:
Within a massive battle Clive Owen escorts the mother and her newborn child which leads to everyone lowering their arms and just staring at the two protagonists slowly exiting the building. The wonder of the child’s existence stops the entire conflict, reminds everyone of why we are actually here… until a shot gets fired again and the terror goes on…
The sense of disappointment is incredible. The idea of a moment where a conflict was so close to be resolved only to revert back to the animalistic warfare is one of the most heartwrenching scenes of this fantastic movie.
