Christmas is not only a time when we celebrate how great and happy we are, in my eyes it should cause us to reflect on the things that are not as jolly as we would like them to be. To me there is no sense in “Christmas joy” if it leads to dillusions that border on wish-fulfillment.
That’s the reason why today is the day for Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. A hilariously, yet somehow uncomfortingly realistic view at a bureaucratic apparatus gone insane.
The movie itself is a classic, filled with satirical genius though I have to admit it is not pleasant to watch – at least that was my experience with Brazil. It is one of the movies I think one should have seen, but I can’t say that it is by any means a perfect film.
Yet what always attracts me to Gilliams’ work is his occassional imperfection combined with his unique and bizare visions.
And if this movie doesn’t get you into Christmas mood, it at least will give you an insane dream sequence that makes Freddy go hide under his bed.
